I'm learning how to live a deeply spiritual life. There's no big secret to it. It's a simple willingness to overcome the things that make me uncomfortable so that I can experience God's presence in my everyday life.
When I first started doing music for the homeless service, I didn't know "how to act." I felt a mixture of guilt and helplessness. I didn't know how to start a conversation. I mean, what do you say to someone who has nothing but the clothes on their back? The usual Sunday "narthex chat" wouldn't cut it.
Slowly I have realized that I don't need to show up with an agenda or a life-changing solution. I just need to show up. My brothers and sisters on the streets have shown me that there's nothing to be uncomfortable about. Simple conversations are what relationships are built on. The Holy Spirit is present in these non-earth-shattering chats. God's glory is weaved throughout every encounter. All we have to do is show up.
