Most theologians would say we can never expect another person to complete us, that only Christ can fill our every need. And it’s certainly true that we cannot expect another person to do that. It’s also true that Christ does complete us.
But I’d like to propose that it is only in seeking Jesus in others that we will find a sense of belonging. And it is only in being Jesus to others that we will find a true sense of purpose and wholeness. After all, Jesus was flesh and blood. He walked on dusty roads and needed his feet washed. He may seem like an ethereal, ghost-like, hyper spiritual being to us, but we can never truly know him until we see him in the flesh… of other people.
And we can never truly love him until we truly love “the least of these,” the people we don’t yet know how to love.
Here are a couple photos of me at The Gathering, a street church where I lead music on a regular basis. It has enriched my life greatly to be a part of this congregation, but it has taken a while for me to not be afraid. Stay tuned for more of the story........
